SEX ON THE CITEE: SKYE NICOLAS

/ENTRY SIX: TUES 27 OCT
As some of you might know, Seasick Mama has altered the submission process a bit, and made it a tad more selective. All the details are located on the main page, but basically it's all about SEX! Syke Nicolas has always been a favorite of mine. His work is always safe and comforting, but also very exciting as well. He has a POTD on WED 14 OCT 2009, which is a ghost image of a very beautiful young girl. The photo is safe, but has a touch of mystery that makes it special.

With the new concept of SEX ON THE CITEE, Skye submitted some more amazing photography, that is not so...safe. I absolutely love them. The photos were attached to the following text:

" Sexual imagery is inescapable as it is everywhere. The potency of sexuality's hold on society is exemplified by its rampant use as the main ingredient in postmodern advertising. Whether direct or subtle, these titillating images continue to take hold on our imagination; feeding on our curiosity, and perpetually expanding our desires.

Skye Nicolas lives and works as an artist in New York City. He continues to captivate his a-list supporters at private viewings in New York as well as various major cities in Europe; some of which have been attended and supported by Philly Adams of the Saatchi Gallery of London, art mogul Jay Jopling, and legendary British curator Sir Norman Rosenthal. Bad Boy Racing Club

/THIS THAT SHIT SHAT/

/ENTRY FOUR: THUR 22 OCT
You can't always expect the best photographers to come to you. Sometimes if your looking for something a little bit more specific you have to hunt for it. Bow and arrow style. I was doing some browsing for the photography I really want/need to be a part of the 2010 summer collection. (To be completely honest, I am still a little unsure of what I REALLY WANT, but aren't we all?) I was doing my usual browsing on Hamburger Eyes, and stumbled upon a photography zine called, Bad Boy Racing Club. It reflected a hint of the style I love the most in photography. Un-posed and raw imagery we can all call home. I contacted the folks over at BBRC and they were so fucking rad, they sent me my very own copy of the BBRC zine that I can't stop looking at. Make sure to grab a copy. Anyways, check out their work, and check out their POTD, posted on TUES 20 OCT 2009.

Micachu & The Shapes!

This weekend my brother and his precious girlfriend are going to visit me here in Brooklyn. I am so thrilled because it will be the first sibling visit since I have moved here! I wanted to show them the best weekend possible, so I purchased them tickets to the coolest band that have hit the scene since MGMT, Michachu & The Shapes.

Originally from the UK, Michachu & The Shapes will be performing at the LITTLEFIELD art space.
Tickets are still on sale, so make sure you grab them while they are hot, and I will see you all Friday!

DONT BECOME THE THINGS YOU HATE: /Video Teaser 2009/ Coming Soon!

Release: DONT BECOME THE THINGS YOU HATE: VIDEO TEASER
by Marial Maher

/DIRECTION: CASEY RANDERSON/
/PHOTOGRAPHY: HAL HIRSHORN/
/VIDEO EDIT: SEASICK MAMA/

During an undocumented time in the 1990's, Calvin Klien launched an advertising campaign for their denim collection through a series of commercials. It was not your typical advertising campaign, using the edge of video art to promote a famous brand, which ended up starting a commotion. The commercials were banned from television (with only supporting obvious evidence) because they were offensive to the public. The commercials appeared pornographic but with the absence of actual nudity. They suggested pedophilia without the sexual action of intercourse. They made you uncomfortable without you having to be there. They were genius.

The only documentation of these ads are currently on YouTube, with no trail of textual critiques or news reports to follow. The videos were shot as a staged casting, with a continuous dialogue between the model and whoever was behind the camera. The conversations are the root to all the perversion and controversy, with provocative questions like, "Do you think you can rip that shirt of yourself?"

Simply shot behind the lens, the director keeps you wanting more. It's seems reasonable to think that these adverts were inappropriate for their time, but in todays society these videos are a gold mines. Shot in vintage 8 mm film, the models looked more similar to a too-cool Brooklyn fashionista, then those models of the 1990's. And to relate these adverts to the contemporary video-art scene, you can see a dash of Peru Ana Ana Peru's sexual exploits, similar to their video Armless Masturbation.

Beyond the sexual innuendoes--these adverts had truly inspired someone in particular, Casey RAnderson: a photographer and filmmaker who is continuously shooting and pulling beautiful imagery out of the simple pleasures. RAnderson pitched the idea of recreating these videos for the next Seasick Mama t-shirt collection, Don't Become The Things You Hate, which was a proposal that could not be refused. His direction alone was enough to settle the collaboration.

"I was looking for inspiration for the project and the title of the CK video was 'Banned', I had to see it," says RAnderson. Moving forward, RAnderson and Seasick Mama got to work--and produced a video with a more contemporary twist, mocking the Calvin Klein adverts to release the new collection. "The idea was to mock the fashion industry. Not a direct stab, but more or less, just to have fun with it." The Seasick Mama campaign explodes with hysterical commentaries, spoken by RAnderson himself, and delivers a video that re-presents a Calvin Klein classic, with an entirely new sensibility.
